What is this SEO Stuff and Why Do I Need It?

Search Engine Optimization, or SEO as it is common referred to, is the practice of increasing the quantity and quality of traffic to your business’s website through organic search engines. The goal of SEO is to get your website to the top of the list of search engine’s such as Google.
An owner of a brick and mortar store knows that increasing foot traffic correlates to increasing revenue and will create advertising and marketing strategies to drive more customers inside their stores. SEO works the same way for a business’s website or online store. SEO can help your business grow by ensuring the site appears high on the list of results returned by a search engine. It’s as important, if not more so, for small businesses to use SEO as it is for large ones. Users trust search engines and having a presence in the top positions for the keywords the user is searching for increases the web site’s trust.
So why should you invest in SEO? SEO can be more important than traditional marketing techniques. According to the Search Engine Journal 70% of the links search users click on are organic and 70-80% of users ignore paid ads, which makes SEO very important. It is also important to note that 75% of users never scroll past the first page of search results. For your business to thrive and survive you need SEO, because without it you have no visibility online when a consumer searches for what you do or sell.
There are two categories of SEO, On-Page SEO and Off-Page SEO. On-Page SEO includes improving keywords, formatting, URLs, navigation, load speed, on-site blogging and responsive design on your website’s pages to enhance your ranking in search engine results. Keyword research and optimization is key to telling the search engine how you want to reach your customers. Off-Page SEO includes improvements off your site such as link building, social media and business profiles and articles.
Most people rarely make buying decisions without searching Google first. Google processes over 3.5 billion searches a day, so if your website doesn’t rank in Google’s search results then you are missing out putting your business in front of customers.
