Does your Small Business Website Have a Call To Action?

Does your Small Business Website Have a Call To Action?

A call to action (CTA) is a marketing tactic that encourages a potential customer to take a specific action, such as making a purchase, subscribing to a newsletter, or filling out a contact form. CTAs are typically placed at the end of a marketing message, such as an email or social media post, and use action-oriented language to prompt the reader to take action.

For small businesses, CTAs are crucial in marketing because they help convert leads into customers. Without a clear and compelling CTA, potential customers may be unsure of what action to take next or may simply move on to a competitor's website. By including a CTA in their marketing messages, small businesses can guide potential customers towards a specific action and increase the likelihood of a sale or conversion. Additionally, CTAs can help small businesses track the success of their marketing campaigns by measuring the number of clicks, sign-ups, or purchases generated by the CTA. Overall, CTAs are a powerful tool for small businesses looking to increase engagement, drive conversions, and ultimately grow their business.

Have you ever had to search a business's website for their phone number? Or you can't even figure out what a business does through their website? A simple call to action can help.

Most small businesses do not have any notable calls to action on their homepage. A few don't even have their phone number on their homepage. This is ridiculous! How do you expect anyone to do business with you?

What Is A Call To Action?

It's pretty simple. A call to action is a statement designed to get an immediate response from a listener or reader. Businesses use it to get their target market to respond through action.

What your call to action is depends on your business. Do you sell a product? Your call to action could be "Buy Now!" If you provide a service, "Get a free quote!" There are endless examples of calls to action.

Bold But Simple

You want your call to action button or banner to stand out. Use colors that are not part of the rest of your website. It doesn't necessarily matter which colors are used. I've never not clicked on a call to action button that was orange and I thought that it should have been yellow. But I may have missed one that blended in with everything else. Make it stand out!

KISS—Keep it simple stupid! This isn't your dissertation. Your call to action should be simple and short. "Buy Now!" "Get a Free Quote!" "Sign up for this!" Call to action phrases use action verbs, like:

  • Call
  • Buy
  • Order
  • Click
  • Register
  • Donate
  • Sign-Up
  • Follow

Takeaway

People who come to your website need to immediately know what your business does and how to contact you about it. A call to action easily solves both of these problems.

But many businesses have taken a "just get something up" approach to their website. Some have no idea how to make a call to action button, much less make their website stand out.
